What is the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-3)?

ECERS-3, an internationally recognized tool, is used to assess and improve the quality of preschool-aged classrooms.

This tool emphasizes the role of educators in creating an environment conducive to children’s developmental progress, assessed through observation of the environment and of adult-child interactions.

The goal of the ERS tool is to provide a framework for offering quality care, education, and professionalism in preschool, kindergarten, and child care classroom environments serving children ages 3 – 5.

What 4-C Can Offer:

Training:

ERS trainings explore the tool subscales, provide guidance for how to use the tool, and examine criteria for each level of quality.

Exploring ECERS-3: Introductory training that reviews each subscale of the environment rating tool in detail. Participants learn how to score and implement the tool within their learning environments.

ECERS-3 Interactions: In-depth training focused on adult-child interactions within the environment rating tool. Participants should be familiar with how to score and use the tool as this training addresses subscale-specific teacher–to–child interactions.

Trainings are Registry-approved and can be 2 or 3-hour sessions.

Observation:

The ECERS-3 tool is becoming increasingly popular within early childhood settings as research continues to show the ties between higher ratings on the ECERS with better child development. The tool is used for both assessment and improvement.

Classroom observations last up to 3 hours in length and include a separate, scheduled 30-minute consultation to review scores and provide clarifications as needed.

4-C observers are valid and reliable. Many have trained at the ERS Institute in North Carolina.
