WISCONSIN CHILD CARE REGULATIONS
LICENSED
PROVIDERS
- Contact: (Wisconsin) Southern Regional Licensing Office - (608) 243-2400
- If caring for 4-8 children, state licensing is mandatory.
- 8 or fewer children including the provider's children if under age 7
- Initial training of 40 hours (plus 10 more if caring for children under age 2)
- 15 hours of continuing education required each year
- Pre-licensing consultation with Wisconsin Child Care Improvement Project
- One or two home visits during licensing process
- Annual home visit after becoming fully licensed
- Written policies must be given to parent when child is enrolled
- Provider can care for children of families receiving county assistance (Wisconsin Shares
program)
- Fee: $15.12 for a 6-month provisional license; $60.50 for a 2 year license

COUNTY CERTIFIED (Providers in Dane County)
- Contact: 4-C office - (608) 271-9181.
- Caring for 1-3 children under the age of 7 plus the provider's children.
- Initial training of 20 hours*
- 5 hours of continuing education required annually*
- Provider may care for children of families receiving county assistance (Wisconsin Shares
program)
- Visits are made to providers upon initial certification, annually
thereafter
to ensure compliance and upon two-year renewals, if a complaint is
filed
and if the provider requests assistance with child care issues.
- Criminal background check and social service check conducted
- Benefits:

- Fee: $50 application fee

City of
Madison Accredited Providers

- 1-3 children under age of 7 years; if Licensed, 4-8 children
- Initial training of 20 or 40 hours depending on regulation
- 20 hours continuing education required annually
- Monitored Family Child Care homes meeting city quality standards; 4-8 home visits
annually
- While becoming Madison accredited, assistance with state child care regulations
- 5 hours of Respite Care every 3 months; more available for a fee
- Access to special curriculum units and equipment loan
- Provider can care for children of families receiving city or county tuition assistance
- Business support and assistance with contracts, rates, parent enrollments
- State Grant Assistance
- Free training and annual family child care conference
- Provider support groups
- Free High Scope training through the City of Madison Child Care Unit
- Fee: $20 Enrollment fee and quarterly fees of $25 (reduced to $5 for low income
providers)
