4-C HELPS PARENTS - Today's families need quality child care. More than half of the mothers with preschool children are in the labor force. These families need quality child care they can count on. 4-C does not make recommendations to parents, but assists parents in becoming better child care consumers. All child care programs in the 4-C database are licensed or certified.

Parents who call 4-C talk to a referral specialist about their child care needs. Issues include the type of care the parent prefers, ages of the children, and the time care is needed. Other child care concerns commonly covered, include explanations of licensing and certification, consultations on the developmental needs of children, and care for children with special needs.

Using this information, the referral specialist conducts a search for licensed and certified providers in the area specified by the parents.

Each parent then receives a list of potential providers and brochures filled with suggestions on selecting quality child care. While there are no "magic check lists," these brochures have helped thousands of parents in their search for child care. Programs that meet national accreditation standards or City of Madison accreditation standards are noted on the computerized list.
