Your Tricks to a Safe Halloween

As ghosts, pirates, and princesses prepare to descend into neighborhoods in search of their favorite treats, 4-C would like to offer these simple safety tips to help make this Halloween fun for your entire family.

COSTUMES
Make sure costumes are short enough to prevent tripping and see that your trick-or-treaters wear shoes that fit properly. Only fire-retardant materials should be used for costumes. Avoid masks that obstruct vision or restrict breathing. Attach your name, address and phone number to the inside of small children's costumes in case your kids get lost or separated from you. Be creative with reflectors on costumes and bags. Costumes should be loose so warm clothes can be worn underneath in case of a "bone chilling" night.

LIGHTING
Make sure the pathway to your home is well lit. If you are using candles to light the way, make sure they are a safe distance from the sidewalk or driveway. If you are going for that scary "dark" effect around your home, be sure there are no tripping hazards in the way to avoid falls. To ensure safety for your child, have them carry a flashlight to light their path.

CANDY
Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include packaged fruit roll-ups, mini boxes of raisins and single-serve packets of low-fat popcorn that can be microwaved later.

Non-food treats are also a hit such as pencils, stickers, and coins. Whatever food item you child receives, parents be sure to inspect the treat before your child eats it. If it looks like it way tampered with or has no wrapper, throw it out.

Make sure young children are accompanied by an adult or responsible teenager when going door-to-door. Teach your children to use sidewalks if they can and walk on the left side of the street facing cars. Plan the trick-or treating route around the neighborhood in advance and agree on a time to return home.

Your family's Halloween doesn't need to be a haunting experience. Just follow these few simple safety tips and use common sense.

Have a Happy & Safe Halloween!
