MATC & 4-C Announce The Professional Credential for Preschool Teachers
The courses in this exciting professional credential are part of the Associates Degree program. Five courses have been selected from the Wisconsin Technical College System Statewide Curriculum to comprise The Wisconsin Professional Credential for Prescho
The Five Courses from the Statewide Curriculum that make up the credential are:

~10-307-178 Art, Music, and Language
By enrolling in the MATC/4-C classes, you can complete this Credential in one year! Completion of a Registry Credential can move you to a higher level on The Registry! FALL 2006
We will offer two classes for the fall semester. One will be held on TUESDAY nights from 6:00-9:00 PM and the other will be held on THURSDAY nights from 6:00-9:00 PM. All classes for the Preschool Credential will be held in room D301 at MATC downtown campus 211 N. Carroll St., Madison.

ECE: Health, Safety, and Nutrition
3 credits
This course examines the topics of health, safety, and nutrition within the context of the early childhood educational setting. Course competencies include: follow governmental regulations and professional standards as they apply to health, safety, and nutrition; provide a safe, healthy, and nutritionally sound early childhood program; adhere to child abuse and neglect mandates; apply Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risk reduction strategies; incorporate health, safety, and nutrition concepts into the children's curriculum. ECE: Child Development
3 credits
The course examines child development within the context of the early childhood education setting. Course competencies include: analyze social, cultural, and economic influences on child development; summarize child development theories; analyze development of children age three through age eight; summarize the methods and designs of child development research; analyze the role of heredity and the environment.

ECE: Guiding Children’s Behavior
3 credits
This course examines positive strategies to guide children's behavior in the early childhood education setting. Course competencies include: summarize early childhood guidance principles; analyze factors that affect the behavior of children; practice positive guidance strategies; develop guidance strategies to meet individual needs; create a guidance philosophy.

ECE: Foundations of Early Childhood Education
3 credits
This course introduces you to the early childhood profession. Course competencies include: integrate strategies that support diversity and anti-bias perspectives; investigate the history of early childhood education; summarize types of early childhood education settings; identify the components of a quality early childhood education program; summarize responsibilities of early childhood education professionals; explore early childhood curriculum models.
SUMMER 2007
We will offer the final course for the Credential in the summer semester. Dates/Times are to be determined. All classes for the Preschool Credential will be held at MATC downtown campus 211 N. Carroll St., Madison.

ECE: Art, Music, and Language
3 credits
This course will focus on beginning level curriculum development in the specific content areas of art, music, and language arts. Course competencies include: examine the critical role of play; establish a developmentally appropriate environment; develop activity plans that promote child development and learning; analyze care giving routines as curriculum; create developmentally appropriate language, literature, and literacy activities; create developmentally appropriate art, music, and movement activities. Prerequisite: 10-307-166.
Scholarships are available through T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® WISCONSIN at Wisconsin Early Childhood Association (WECA) for those who meet program eligibilities. TEACH is a statewide scholarship program designed to help child care teaching staff, Head Start teachers, family child care providers, center directors and administrators meet their professional development goals while continuing their current employment in regulated child care settings. T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps) links education, compensation and commitment to improving the quality of early childhood programs. The scholarship recipient, sponsoring program (child care center, Head Start program, or family child care home), and T.E.A.C.H. work in partnership. A practicum experience is not included in this credential as most colleges require that a student be enrolled in an Associate or Bachelors Degree program to participate in a practicum experience. The courses must have been taken since 2000.
This credential will have a commission process as in The Registry’s other professional credentials. The portfolio will be based on the Program Standards from The National Association for the Education of Young Children and activities that may be assigned by instructors of the courses. If you have taken the approved courses and wish to have the Wisconsin Professional Credential for Preschool Teachers, please contact The Registry for details about the portfolio and the commission process to complete the credential.
